Rebuilding Together

May 4, 2011- On April 30th at 8 am, 39 enthusiastic volunteers from Winzler & Kelly and Exchange Bank, through the Rebuilding Together Workday, showed up at Becoming Independent. Volunteers updated walls with new fresh calming paint color, jack hammered sidewalks and built a new wheel chair accessible ramp to the main entrance, freshened up the community garden by weeding, spreading bark and planting succulents, and replaced old stained and worn out carpeting with new tile flooring.

Everyone is excited and delighted with the new improvements. Thank you to Rebuilding Together and all of the wonderful volunteers that gave up their Saturday to lend a helping hand at Becoming Independent.

“We are committed to the BI vision that people with disabilities can attain an improved quality of life through meaningful work, friends and community support,” says Jenny Mountjoy, Dolce Mia’s creative director and vice president. “We personally and professionally benefit greatly from our partnership with BI and its workers. We want an opportunity to give back to Becoming Independent and to our community.”

San Quentin Protest

February 8, 2011- Facing millions of dollars in funding cuts by the Brown administration, hundreds of people rallied on Tuesday morning at San Quentin Prison to protest a state budget proposal to spend $64.7 million to launch an expansion of Death Row. The total expansion at San Quentin would cost taxpayers $1.6 billion over the next decade, according to Legislative estimates.

Participants in the rally were people with disabilities, their families and advocates from Becoming Independent, CHD/disABILITY Services, North Bay Industries, Old Adobe Developmental Services, and Marin Ventures.

Check out Becoming Independent's press release for all the details.

Rally at San Quentin

February 7, 2011- Rally at the East Gate of San Quentin to fight funding cutbacks to services for people with disabilities. 10:30 am on Tuesday, February 8th. Stand up & be counted! $750 million in cuts is being proposed to California's health & human services, yet a $1.6 billion increase to San Quentin's death row is proposed over the next 11 years.

What this is not: This is not a protest to oppose the death penalty.
What this is: A bold demonstration of the importance of examining every state dollar closely at this time. It is a opportunity to join up with other citizens who are questioning budget/spending for CA.

Check out Becoming Independent's announcement for more details.
